Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (formerly Alberta Transportation) manages over 31,600 kilometers of provincial highways — one of Canada's most extensive highway systems — serving a province that is an economic powerhouse in energy, agriculture, and manufacturing. Key freight corridors include the CANAMEX Corridor (Highway 2 / QE2), the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1), and Highway 63 (the Highway to Fort McMurray). The department administers commercial vehicle permits, oversees oversize and overweight load regulations, and manages Alberta's 511 road condition system. As a gateway to northern oil sands development, Alberta's highway system handles some of the heaviest and most complex freight loads in North America.

Notable Rules

Alberta permits B-train combination vehicles up to 27.5 m on designated provincial highways. Tandem axle limit of 17,100 kg is slightly below the CCMTA standard of 18,000 kg. The oil sands and oilfield industries generate intensive heavy haul on secondary roads — load-restricted corridors near Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, and the Peace Country are common.
