The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) manages more than 11,000 centerline miles of state highways through a state that ranks among the top in the nation for trucking activity. Indiana's highway system — including I-65, I-70, I-74, I-80, I-90, and I-94 — serves as a crossroads for freight moving between the Midwest, East Coast, and South. INDOT administers the commercial vehicle permitting system, seasonal weight limits, and coordinates with the Indiana State Police for enforcement. The TrafficWise system and 511IN provide truckers with real-time traffic and weather alerts across the state.

Notable Rules

Indiana is a major Midwest freight corridor connecting Chicago to the eastern US via I-65, I-70, and I-80/90 (Indiana Toll Road). Indiana has one of the higher diesel fuel tax rates in the Midwest. Oversize loads on the Indiana Toll Road require a separate Toll Road permit. I-65 south of Indianapolis and the I-465 belt are high-volume freight segments.
