The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) manages over 5,400 miles of state highways through a vast desert state serving as a major freight gateway between California, the Pacific Northwest, and the rest of the nation. Critical freight corridors include I-15, I-80, I-11, and US-95. Nevada's position between California's ports and the interior of the US makes its highway system essential for retail, e-commerce, and manufacturing distribution. NDOT administers commercial vehicle permits, oversees the Nevada 511 system for road conditions, and manages several highly trafficked truck corridors serving Las Vegas and Reno logistics centers. The department also enforces load limits on sensitive desert routes.

Notable Rules

Nevada imposes a Weight Distance Tax (WDT) on trucks over 26,000 lbs operating on Nevada roads — this is separate from IFTA and requires registration with the Nevada DMV. Carriers unfamiliar with NV operations commonly overlook this requirement. Las Vegas and Reno are primary freight centers. I-80 and I-15 are the primary Interstate corridors.
