Nunavut • Canada

In Nunavut — Canada's largest and most remote territory — transportation infrastructure is managed primarily by the Department of Community and Government Services. Nunavut has no road connections to the rest of Canada; all communities are accessible only by air or sea. Sealift operations during the brief Arctic summer are the primary means of delivering bulk goods, fuel, and heavy freight to Nunavut's 25 communities. The department manages community airstrips and coordinates with shipping companies for annual sealift deliveries. Commercial freight logistics in Nunavut are uniquely challenging due to extreme Arctic conditions, the brief open-water season (typically July-October), and the high cost of air freight for urgent supplies.

Notable Rules

Nunavut has no all-season highways connecting communities — the largest territory in Canada has the most limited road infrastructure. Most freight arrives by annual sealift or by air cargo. Local roads exist in larger communities (Iqaluit, Rankin Inlet, Cambridge Bay) but long-haul trucking in the traditional sense is very limited. Permits are issued by Nunavut Community and Government Services.
