Oregon • United States of America

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) manages over 7,900 miles of state highways connecting the Pacific Coast to the interior Northwest and facilitating major freight flows through Pacific ports. Key corridors include I-5 (a critical north-south freight artery), I-84, I-82, and US-97. Oregon's Port of Portland handles significant grain, vehicle, and container exports. ODOT administers commercial vehicle permits, enforces size and weight regulations, and manages the TripCheck.com system for real-time road conditions, weather alerts, and chain controls essential for truckers on mountain passes like the I-84 corridor through the Columbia River Gorge.

Notable Rules

Oregon imposes a Weight-Mile Tax (WMT) on trucks over 26,000 lbs operating on Oregon roads — this is separate from IFTA and requires carrier registration with ODOT Motor Carrier Transportation. Oregon allows GVW up to 105,500 lbs on designated state highways. Combination vehicle length limit of 68 ft is higher than most states. The Columbia River Gorge (I-84) has high-wind restrictions for empty trailers.
