Texas • United States of America

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) manages the nation's largest state highway system with over 80,000 miles of roads serving the second largest state by both area and population. Texas is the nation's leading freight state, with key corridors including I-10, I-20, I-35, I-37, I-40, I-45, and I-69. The state's six major ports, extensive rail network, and proximity to Mexico's manufacturing heartland make it a cornerstone of North American freight logistics. TxDOT administers commercial vehicle permits through eTRACS, manages oversize load corridors, and provides the Texas511 travel information system. The department coordinates with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and manages hundreds of truck weigh stations and check points.

Notable Rules

Texas allows higher axle weights on designated state highways (25,000 lbs single, 46,000 lbs tandem). Interstate axle limits follow federal standards (20,000/34,000 lbs). No spring weight restrictions — Texas has a year-round mild road-posting policy. Oversize/overweight permits are issued by TxDMV, not TxDOT.
